Super Night Shot

Gob Squad (United Kingdom, Germany)
4.09., 5.09. 21:30 Splendid Palace, Elizabetes str, 61, Riga | 25 / 17 EUR

In the cold winter of 2003, a time before Google Maps, YouTube, selfie sticks and smartphones, Gob Squad set out onto the streets of Berlin for the first time – equipped with video cameras, charm and naive blind faith – in order to shoot a unique live film portrait of the city with random passers-by cast as the stars. Over the next 20 years, Super Night Shot became Gob Squad’s most successful and widely toured production, with hundreds of performances on every continent of the world. For the length of a videotape, Gob Squad become heroes trying to solve the problems of the people they encounter – whether financial, spiritual, social – or very practical. Each show is as totally unique as the city in which it is filmed and the people who inhabit it.

About artists

Gob Squad is a seven-headed monster, a multinational arts collective with seven bosses, a patchwork family, a Berliner institution and a social utopia. Gob Squad have been devising, directing and performing together since 1994, working where theatre meets art, media and real life. Always on the hunt for beauty amidst the mundane, they place their work at the heart of urban life. Everyday life and magic, banality and idealism, reality and entertainment are all set on a collision course and the unpredictable results are captured on video. Motivated by a desire for collective experience and meaningful encounters, they often invite local guests, audience members or passers-by to step beyond their traditional roles and look for ways to transcend barriers of language, class, age and culture.

Core members are Johanna Freiburg, Sean Patten, Sharon Smith, Berit Stumpf, Sarah Thom, Bastian Trost and Simon Will joined by a pool of collaborating artists.
