Monument to the taste of lemon
19.08. - 31.10 Long-standing object, Latgales iela 178, Rīga | Free
Last year, while Riga was debating which monuments to demolish, 170 primary school students working on a new guidebook, Book of Riga, came up with 170 new ideas for sculptures in Riga. This year, we built one of them – the Monument to the Taste of Lemon, an urban object proposed by student Anna Delzova, which doubles as a lemonade stand and a symbolic podium for children to address residents and passers-by with messages that are important to them.
Implemented with the support of the Riga State City Municipality as part of the project Monument to the taste of lemon – a project for the involvement of the youngest groups of society in the processes of urban planning and cultural formation
About artists
The ‘Book of Riga’ team invites its predominantly adult audience to see the city through the eyes of its youngest inhabitants.* Anna Delzova* is a student from Andrejs Pumpurs 11th elementary school in Riga and and the monument to the taste of lemon is her idea. It also serves as a kiosk, a lemonade stand and a small platform from which children can interact with the residents of the neighbourhood.
Gundega Evelone is a multidisciplinary artist. Although she holds an MA in Sculpture from the Art Academy of Latvia, her practice spans various mediums that are called upon as required in order to create an ever more encompassing staged version of reality that strives to wholly involve and influence the viewer. Currently the artist is moving in two distinctly opposed directions – she explores the human element in different social and historical situations while working with such fundamental concepts as ‘space’, ‘matter’ and ‘existence – nonexistence’, trying to find connections in her work between the real, tangible world and each individual’s subjective perception. Gundega Evelone has participated in more than 50 different art projects in Latvia and abroad both as an author, as well as curator.
