White Night with Cities by Night

Various artists

This April, women of different ages, nationalities, and professions took part in a project in Riga, walking alone at dusk. They identified places where they felt safe and where this feeling of safety ended. Italian artist Valentina Medda has transformed the information provided by the women of Riga into maps of Riga at night, where unsafe places are concealed, as if they did not exist. The exhibition Cities by Night reveals new geographical, physical, emotional, and political boundaries of cities through women’s seemingly personal experiences, prompting us to ask ourselves: Where are the borders of my city’s security and belonging, and how do they influence my views, prejudices, and cultural identity?

On September 6, from 18:00, visitors of the Contemporary Culture Forum White Night are invited to attend the exhibition Cities by Night, featuring a special evening programme accompanied by a musical performance by musician and percussionist Vija Moore and readings of documentary stories dedicated to experiences of violence and fear.
