A Concert for Deferred Dreams

Laima Jaunzema, Latvian Association of the Blind (Latvia)

This event is part of an ongoing creative process still unfolding during the festival. It continues the collaboration between the New Theatre Institute of Latvia, the Latvian Association of the Blind and choreographer Laima Jaunzema, which began with research, together with blind and partially sighted participants, to explore what inclusive contemporary dance means in practice. Throughout this process, they sought ways to make dance classes accessible, to experience movement beyond conventional notions, and to create an environment in which everyone can participate fully and creatively.

During the workshops, working together with the choreographer, the group explores its creativity through practices that engage both movement and voice. The result is a collective performance that brings together all the creative ideas and dreams of the group’s participants – an event whose content and form are shaped through a shared creative process. Festival visitors will experience an event created by the participants – the Concert for Deferred Dreams – which reveals their interests, ideas and collectively made decisions.

This event invites us to broaden our understanding of dance, of how we perceive movement and creativity, and of how shared experiences are created. At the same time, it is a story of collaboration, trust and the opportunity to learn from one another, demonstrating that inclusive artistic practice enriches not only its participants, but also anyone who is willing to get involved.

EASY READ VERSION

The concert of deferred dreams is a long process.

It started before the festival

and continues during the festival.

The people working on the concert are:

  • The New Theatre Institute of Latvia,
  • The Latvian Society of the Blind,
  • Choreographer Laima Jaunzema.

Earlier, they studied inclusive contemporary dance.

This helped them understand:

  • how to create accessible dances,
  • how to move more diverse,
  • how to open an environment to everyone.

Participants had workshops.

They tried different movements.

They tried to add voices..

Then they joined their ideas.

Together they decided

about the concert.

The concert tells a story about trust

and collaboration.

We can always learn from each other.

We get richer when we are all together.

About artist

Laima Jaunzeme’s artistic practice is rooted in research on the politics of the body. Her artistic interest in exploring the body as a medium is influenced by the silence of intimacy, set against the fact that the body is inevitably part of broader disruptions in space-time, communication and perception, as well as the retrospective shifts of political events. Laima creates interdisciplinary choreography, resembling dimensional portals in space-time, where the body’s perception is challenged with high sensitivity.

Laima graduated from SNDO (School for New Dance Development) in Amsterdam, having previously studied dance in Berlin and Denmark. She has expanded her knowledge through the course ‘Commissioning and Curating Contemporary Public Art’ at the HDK Valand Academy in Sweden and ‘We will dance with mountains’ with Bayo Akomolafe, and has also received a Dance Web scholarship (mentored by Izabel Lewis).

The performance is part of the EU project “Magic Carpets” and part of the project “KKC – kopienu kultūras centra attīstība sociālajai saliedētībai”, Nr. 4.3.2.0/1/25/A/044. The New Theatre Institute of Latvia is responsible for the content of the event.
